Match Report
Skinners' School Boys-U13A vs  ESTT Zone Finals
On: Saturday, 13 Jan 2018
Venue: Away

On Saturday 13th January, Skinners’ U13 Table Tennis Team travelled to London to compete as Kent champions, in the zone finals. There they met the winners from the home counties.

At the group stage in match one, they faced their greatest opposition, Varndean School, East Sussex. With a draw looking likely, a magnificent effort from Eddie Gillhouley in beating Varndean’s number one in a close 5 set game ensured Skinner’s victory with a close win of 5:3. Their following matches against Sandown School, from Essex and Salesian School, Surrey, resulted in convincing wins of 8:0 and 7:1 respectively. These victories put Skinners’ top of the group table and through to the semi-final where they met Westgate School, Hampshire.

The level of competition stepped up a gear and the boys found themselves in a very hard-fought semi-final match. At the halfway stage it was level on 2 games a-piece with 4 games to play. Skinners’ lost the next two games and with just two remaining games, were 4:2 down. Ben Forrester and Eddie Gillhouley battled hard, each winning in 5 set games, and with Ben winning in the final set 19:17. This meant that Skinners’ had drawn the match and the winner would be decided on count back. Westgate was declared the winner 17:13 on count back.

Huge congratulations to all the boys who played so well, demonstrating both their fierce desire to win balanced with typical Skinners’ sportsmanship. This was most evident in their support of each other and graciousness in the defeat as well as victory. They should be very pleased with themselves and proud of their performance.

Well done to Noah who managed the pressure of playing number one admirably always encouraging the team; Eddie who won crucial games and only dropped one game out of 7; Dan Record who moved up to play number three and played courageously: and Ben Forrester who moved up from the B Team to take fourth spot and play so well. Special thanks to John Burleton who gave his time to coach the team.
